8. If you want to live the e46 partyvi life but with more misery and unreliability buy an e38.

But hey the ac works and the sunroof but its daily driver duties will be suspended until I save up for a new suspension rebuild

Park it and keep it as a parts car. Buy another well sorted example, with service records showing the cooling system and suspension refreshed within the past 75000 miles.

You might drop 6-8k on one in excellent condition with no immediate needs.

Start adding up parts cost for the one you have, and base prices off of quality parts, not URO garbage. Add labor costs if you can’t diy it all. By the time you’re done calculating, the cost of a replacement e38 will probably seem cheap... plus you’ll have a parts car.

My .02, as an e38 owner whose car has just as many issues.

Rebuilt cooling system, still losing coolant. Replaced valve and timing cover gaskets, leaking again in less than a year. Replaced front suspension except shocks, springs and top mounts... needs shocks springs and top mounts. Needs rear suspension, badly, as in its a deathtrap at highway speeds. Fuel tank has a rapid drip above 1/4 tank. Heater blower stopped working over a year ago. Cupholders and glovebox obviously broken. Rear wheel wells and bottom of doors began rusting. Took it to bare metal, primed it, rusting through again 6 months later. Sunroof stopped working. Stereo amp crapped out. Needs a left rear window regulator. Dsc light has been on since I bought it. Guibo and diff mounts are absolutely shot... but at least the fuel pump and transmission I had to replace are still working.

...I could go on, but nothing else compares at this price point, so I just keep moving forward because the car is pretty much unkillable.

Hopefully you have no regrets when you hit the $10k mark on repairs, lol.

I suggest you park it, cut a hole in the roof, fill it with soil and plant a mulberry tree.
